Patient services

Patient services

It is a priority for Shriners Children's Ohio to keep your child's family doctor/primary care physician informed about treatment plans.

Between visits, local providers can help patients with medical needs such as removing stitches, staples or bandages. Providers or family members can also send photos to the hospital to address any questions or concerns.

Inpatient care

During a child's stay, we will do our best to help the family in every way possible. Our goal is to treat the child while helping the entire family to adjust to the stress the medical condition or injury has caused. Because children need love and emotional support from parents and families, we practice a "family-centered" approach to care.

Outpatient care

Outpatient services provide follow-up care for patients discharged from the hospital following plastic or reconstructive surgery. The department also manages and evaluates new referrals for small burn injuries and congenital disorders. Our physicians, nurses, occupational/physical therapists and care coordinators work together to carefully evaluate a child's condition, manage a child's progress and develop a care plan that provides the best possible outcome for the child.

Outpatient services also manages our telehealth program. This program allows patients in some areas access to our skilled clinical staff without traveling to Dayton. Speak with your care manager to determine if telehealth is available in your area.

Nursing care

Families can be assured of quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice at Shriners Children's Ohio. Our nursing staff knows that children need and benefit from the love and emotional support of parents and family during their hospital stay. In recognition of this, our nursing staff fosters an environment that keeps parents and families close to the child and actively involved. The health care team and family develop a plan of care to meet the child's physical, emotional and developmental needs while in the hospital and anticipate the family's needs in continuing the child's care at home.

Occupational and physical therapy

The goal of our occupational/physical therapy department is to prevent deformities, restore movement and complete range of motion following burn injury. Therapists work with patients and families to achieve the best functional and cosmetic results. Individualized programs are developed to help patients return to their pre-burn level of activity. Therapy involves work in the areas of mobility, scar management, self-care and activities of daily living to assure a child's total recovery. Several kinds of equipment, like stationary bikes or rowing machines, are used in a gym-like environment to encourage movement.

Intensive outpatient treatment program

Following surgery, some patients are discharged into our Individualized Outpatient Treatment Program (IOTP.) This may be for services such as occupational or physical therapy or outpatient continued nursing care, or while awaiting a post-operative follow up appointment. Arrangements are made with Family Services/Care Management, 513-872-6229, for outpatient housing during an IOTP stay.
